The interests of the powers that be and societal inertia contribute to the disempowerment of much of humanity. Some of us have felt that a great contribution to resistance can be made by finding or developing ways that people at the local level can be more in the driving seat of their own destinies. Examples of this range from improving ways that city people can feed back into municipal decision making in Scotland, involving illegal sturgeon fishermen on the Danube in improving sustainable fishing or ensuring that indigenous communities in the Pacific or Amazon jungle do not lose their traditional rights over the resources (and livelihoods) by helping them exercise their stewardship.
