UK - Resisting the corporate takeover of football
In May 2005 our football club Manchester United was taken over by the Glazer Family, despite fierce opposition from supporters. Many of us had been involved in trying to prevent this takeover and huge protest marches and demonstrations had taken place at Old Trafford. However despite this single largest mobilisation of supporter opposition we were sadly unsuccessful. Thus, a family who had no links to Manchester United and saw our club only as a vehicle to make themselves money now owned our club. They further compounded the insult by ‘loading’ the debt incurred in buying the shares onto the club itself, effectively meaning supporters were being asked to buy the club for them.
