Good storytelling strengthens social movements
Ive spent two weeks in the Colombian jungle on the border with Panama with farmers that literally lived in the so-called Golden Triangle, much desired by multinationals. Theyve been violently displaced from their lands by Colombian Paramilitaries and the government army in 1997. Horrible atrocities occurred, and they had to flee like so many other forced displaced people in Colombia that end up in slums, if not murdered, just for the sake of economical interest. They resisted though, and started a law-case to win back their lands, which they did. After just watching the video of Naomi Klein talking about the greatest threat to capitalism are the communities that cant be bought, i wanted to bring to your attention that the (afro descendent) farmers in Cacarica are repeatedly offered sums of money for their lands but do not accept. They do this of course to protect the land, but also because of their consciousness that their case is not only a local but also a global issue. Just thought Id add that, it is an interesting aspect I think that you talk about in the video - I think Its an effective way of resistance, although in some cases quite dangerous and requiring an immense amount of courage.
