The rickshaw speeds through the police lines in the Delhi night. We pass the candlelit vigil being held by our opponents: those seduced by the empty promises of outdated western development. I make my way to the railway station platform where I am to meet those participating in the ‘Rally in the Valley’. The Rally - in the Narmada river valley - had been organised to draw attention to the immediate prospect of submergence faced by over 50 villages in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. I read an article in the Guardian newspaper. It was by the Indian author Arundhati Roy. In it she described the plight of the Advivasi (tribal) people on the banks of India’s holiest river, the Narmada. She made a call for international observers and participants to come and support or participate in the Monsoon-long satyagraha (Gandhi’s Truth Force, or nonviolent civil disobedience) that was going to be conducted in defiance of the construction of mega dams along the valley (that would, if all built, displace up to 15 million people).
