Good storytelling strengthens social movements
Ok, so this really isn’t a contribution, but maybe you can pass this along to Gael…
Recently, I read an article about a poem or commentary by Gael, expressing the pain he felt about an incident that happened in Michoacan, Mexico on Independence Day night. A group of people, who were celebrating at a gathering were injured by a grenade that was thrown into the public, by an unknown individual. He expressed how he felt that this attack made it feel as if though it was an attack on his personal identity and hurt him greatly to see that this had happened. A reporter who read the poem said that Gael had no reason why he should be affected by this since he lives a hollywood style life, away from Mexico and continued to mock him by saying that his words were confusing and made no sense.
I have to say this is ridiculous. Since when did it become unacceptable for someone to express their feelings about how certain events affect us? I live in San Diego, CA, about 10 minutes away from Tijuana. What I hear everyday about what’s going on over there, and it affects me greatly, because I lived over there as a child. When I heard what happened in Michoacan, it affected me as well because I have spent many summers over there at my Grandmothers house. I can understand how this attack can feel personal on your identity and memories. When you hear something that hits so close to home, even though you may not live there, it becomes a concern. For all you know, that could have been a family member of yours.
I feel this drug war and power war in Mexico is affecting many of us who live far away or just minutes away. It hurts to see that in a great place with so much love and culture, a black cloud continues to hang over it and is suffocating communities and the innocent people that live in it. This plague is taking its toll. Many are afraid to speak up and that’s a problem, because a silent voice can never be heard.
Well, that’s that. Thanks for taking the time to read my rant. I also have to say thanks to posting my contribution. I greatly appreciate it. I have to say, a lot of us feel the same around the world and it’s great to read their interesting stories. I really hope you guys keep up the good job! Reading these contributions really gives a better understanding of what’s going on outside of our back yard. I can’t wait to see the documentary. Have a good day all. J
