Good storytelling strengthens social movements
During January we are researching the border area and the stories of migrants who are risking their lives to cross the desert to head North in search of jobs.
This is the Southern edge of America where the so-called ‘third world’ rubs against the ‘first world’ and bleeds. This border, more than any other in the world best represents what i think we are trying to explore in the film. America is the world’s largest gated community living under a siege mentality, speaking about ‘invasions’, ‘illegals’, ‘aliens’ and ‘frontlines’.
The deaths in the desert are about the deaths of people trying to ‘break in’ at the very boundary between rich and poor, between the haves and have nots.
We are wanting to understand why millions of people are trying to ‘break in’ to America, to understand the economic context that creates a push and pull effect, and why there has been such a rapid rise in deaths in the last decade’.
