Good storytelling strengthens social movements
We at Resist are honored to be working with Random Hacks of Kindness to create a data visualization that illuminates the role of labor demand in migration.
We will be working with the RHoK team in Washington, D.C., on June 2-3, 2012. Find more information at http://www.rhok.org/.
Participants in the Resist Network recently sent us notice of a new media project for stateless peoples:
“The project ‘stateless plug-in’ attempts to draw attention to the issue of stateless people (people with no citizenship rights), and takes the form of a browser extension which intervenes in digital territory by planting masses of black flags in your interface, linking you to diverse positions on statelessness.
“By interconnecting an extensive range of perspectives and voices on the issue, the stateless plug-in generates an unpredicted non-linear and dynamic story-line with space for unanticipated thoughts and connections. You can see the project under: http://statelessplugin.net”
The project was initiated in the context of the Dutch Mediafonds and the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam.

Immigrants are for sale in this country. Sold to private prison corporations who are locking them up for obscene profits!
Here are the top 3 things YOU need to know about the Private Prison money scheme:
The victims: Private prisons don’t care about who they lock up. At a rate of $200 per immigrant a night at their prisons, this is a money making scheme that destroys families and lives.
The players: CCA (Corrections Corporation of America), The Geo Group and Management and Training corporations—combined these private prisons currently profit more than $5 billion a year.
The money: These private prisons have spent over $20 million lobbying state legislators to make sure they get state anti-immigrant laws approved and ensure access to more immigrant inmates.

On September 30, 2010, the Global Migration Group on the Human Rights of Migrants in Irregular Situation adopted a statement.
It notes that ‘States have addressed irregular migration solely through the lens of sovereignty, border security or law enforcement, sometimes driven by hostile domestic constituencies. Although States have legitimate interests in securing their borders and exercising immigration controls, such concerns cannot, and indeed, as a matter of international law do not, trump the obligations of the State to respect the internationally guaranteed rights of all persons, to protect those rights against abuses, and to fulfill the rights necessary for them to enjoy a life of dignity and security.’
The Global Migration Group is an inter-agency group bringing together 12 United Nations agencies, the World Bank, and the International Organization for Migration,
