Good storytelling strengthens social movements

Sheena Matheiken’s Uniform Project Photograph: Sheena Matheiken
New Yorker Sheena Matheiken is testing a project that will see her wearing the same dress every day for a year. ’‘Starting May 2009, I have pledged to wear one dress for one year as an exercise in sustainable fashion. Here’s how it works: There are 7 identical dresses, one for each day of the week. Every day I will reinvent the dress with layers, accessories and all kinds of accoutrements, the majority of which will be vintage, hand-made, or hand-me-down goodies.’‘
The project aims to raise enough money for the Akanksha Foundation to provide uniforms and other school essentials for children from Indian slums. So far they’ve raised just over $7,000 – suggesting that some of her followers are more interested in what she is wearing than in donating.
